We first talked with Professors Dirk Schoenmaker of Erasmus University and Willem Schramade of Nyenrode Business University a little over a year ago. Both have been researching long-term value for years and just published their (second) book, Corporate Finance for Long Term Value: 630 pages about the importance of and how the integrated value of organizations can be calculated. This subject fascinates us professionally because it offers plenty of tools for strategy development and the associated change agenda.
We discussed the feasibility of calculating the integrated value of organizations in practice. How do you calculate a company's financial, social, and ecological value using only public information, the same starting points for all organizations, and the most objective possible sources and methods? We quickly concluded that this would be a meticulous task but could be extremely valuable in the debate about futureproof development.
So, we started calculating the integrated value of 23 of the AEX-listed companies. Companies like Unilever, ASML, Shell, Heineken, Randstad. Led by Dirk and Willem, a team of MBA corporate finance MBA students from Nyenrode, almost 400 corporate finance master's students from the Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus, and a team of analysts, project managers, and designers from ftrprf spent more than 10-years worth of man-hours working to arrive at the AEX Futureproof Index. We calculated dozens of factors, including employee health & wellbeing, water pollution, corporate taxes, carbon emissions, and biodiversity impact.
You can read the outcome here. (Not-a-)spoiler alert: of the 23 companies examined, 15 scored a positive integral value. This means that they have a bigger societal value than financial value. Philips even scores a Futureproof ratio of 4.86, meaning the societal value is almost five times as big as the company's financial value. We can be proud of that. Eight companies score lower, and the lowest three ensure that we end up in the red on average. And there is much more to say about it. Download the index here.
